The Perfect Coonawarra Weekend
If you’ve visited the Limestone Coast in South Australia before, you know what a magnificent region it is (and how lucky we are to live and work here!) However, since it’s a good few hours – between 4-6 hours from either Melbourne or Adelaide - it’s definitely off the beaten track for a typical food and wine weekend getaway. That being said, it’s well worth the visit!
Recently, Fairfax good food visited the region and shared their ‘must-visit’ picks for Coonawarra. Here’s a few of their recommendations – which we couldn’t agree more on!
Drink Ottelia + Eat Fodder – indulge in delicious (yet so simple) wood fire pizzas or a share platter of fresh produce. After a long road trip from Adelaide or Canberra, or transfer from Mt Gambier, this local haunt is a welcomed pit stop before the wine tasting begins!
Cellar Door visits – did someone say wine tasting? The great things about Coonawarra is that there are around 20 cellar doors to visit, including of course Brand’s Laira. If you’ve got limited time or you’re not sure where to start, the team at Coonawarra Experiences are a good place to start. They can create a tailored Coonawarra adventure for you, complete with transfers.
Pipers of Penola – the actual town of Coonawarra is tiny so lucky for visitors Penola is only ten minutes up the road and has a number of delicious cafes and restaurants to choose from. Pipers of Penola is a long-time favourite amongst locals and visitors in the mood for a night out. With an impressive wine list and inspiring contemporary Australian dishes to match, a gastronomy experience at Pipers is not to be missed.
